First: Don't Rush In With a Dry Cloth

The worst thing you can do right after a storm is grab a dry rag and start wiping. All you'll do is push fine particles into the air and re-settle them somewhere else, or worse, breathe them in. Open windows only after the outside air has cleared. Give the dust inside a chance to settle completely before you start, usually an hour or two after the storm passes.

Room-by-Room Cleanup Plan

Entry and Living Areas

Start here because it's where doors opened and closed most. Dust will be heaviest near entry points and on horizontal surfaces like shelves, window sills, and ceiling fan blades. Ceiling fans are almost always overlooked. Use a damp microfiber cloth on fan blades before you turn them on, or you'll just spray dust across the room.

Kitchen

Garage and Laundry Room

These take the worst of it. Garage doors have gaps at the bottom and sides, and dust pours in. Sweep the floor in a single direction toward the door, then blow out or vacuum corners. Check your dryer vent cover outside. Dust and debris can clog exterior vents quickly, which is both a fire hazard and an efficiency issue.

What to Do Before the Next Haboob
